ACV-CSCIASIA.ORG, JAKARTA – Hundreds of workers who are affiliated with the Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSBSI) held a May Day 2024 demonstration in the Horse Statue area, Jakarta, Wednesday (01/05/2024).
The President of KSBSI, Elly Rosita Silaban, in her speech said that currently the number of trade unions/workers is increasing, but this is not accompanied by an increase in the number of members.
“There are more and more labor unions, but their members do not show any increase, meaning this is a setback for unionism.” said Elly Rosita Silaban.
Elly Rosita Silaban added that regarding the unclear wage system in Indonesia, there is already a minimum wage but there are still wages below that wage, called the agreed wage.
“Then there was a recommendation from the 2023 ILO session regarding the Omnibus Law, which stated that the articles of the Job Creation Law should be improved by including public participants, especially workers. And this was not implemented by the Indonesian government.” Elly explained.
Elly Rosita Silaban confirmed that this year, she had been appointed as head of the delegation of labor representatives to the 2024 ILO session in Geneva next month.
“We are waiting for the Indonesian government’s good intentions to improve the Job Creation Law at least until next month before we leave for Geneva, before we can bring this issue to be discussed internationally for the second time at the next ILO session,” said Elly Rosita Silaban.
Finally, Elly Rosita Silaban emphasized that there is no democracy without labor unions. This has become an international slogan that is currently being echoed in the world.
