Wages

Wages indicate the level of welfare of workers, which has the most direct and tangible effect on the daily life of workers. Wages for workers are rights that must be obtained because of the value of their contribution to the production process. However, in many parts of the world, including Asia, access to adequate and regular wages is not guaranteed.

In certain countries, wage arrears continue to be a problem. In some cases, workers who have not received their wages are never paid because of the company’s bankruptcy.

  • Problems can also arise in cases where part of the wages, and sometimes a large part, is paid in kind. Such a situation pushes the worker concerned into poverty. In some instances, these practices may expose them to debt bondage or forced labor risk.

The erosion of purchasing power due to the economic crisis and the pandemic has prompted us to emphasize the link between setting minimum wages and taking action to fight poverty. In line with that, the Global Jobs Pact, which the International Labor Conference adopted in 2009, made several minimum wage references to respond to the international economic crisis.
