ITUC Calls for Stronger International Social Protection Financing

ACV-CSCIASIA.ORG, – Recently, the International Labor Organization (ILO) held a meeting with its partners. Where, the meeting was attended by representatives from government representatives, social partners and major development donors. The aim of the meeting was also to look at the progress made under the ILO’s Global Excellence Programme. In Building a Social Protection Floor for All, which provides technical assistance and financial support to countries for the development and expansion of social protection systems.

At the opening, ITUC Vice President Antonio Lisboa highlighted that expanding social protection is a top priority for the labor movement, as more than half of the world’s population does not have any protection.

He emphasized that these problems were largely due to the large financing gap and criticized the recent decisions of several countries. Where to reduce their social spending as part of austerity measures, which are often promoted by international financial institutions.

The global labor movement is calling for greater international coordination in financing through:

1. The establishment of a Global Social Protection Fund.
2. A substantial increase in the share of overseas development aid allocated to social protection to at least 7% by 2030.
3. Assistance that goes beyond technical support to countries.
In order to develop adequate, sustainable social protection systems in the long term, development partners must provide financial assistance to states themselves, as key actors for implementation and extension of national social protection systems. (RED)
