Meeting the European Parliament, Elly: The Importance of Labor Clauses in the Indonesia-EU CEPA

ACVCSCIASIA.ORG, BRUSSEL – The President of KSBSI, Elly Rosita Silaban Yesterday arrived in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, which is also the capital of the European Union, to hold meetings with KSBSI’s international partners and meet with the European Commission. This meeting was conducted just before the international agenda to attend the 111th International Labor Conference (ILC) on 5-16 June 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Elly explained that the meeting discussed more about the Indonesia-Eurepean Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA), which is currently in the process of being negotiated by both parties, in relation to workers’ concerns about the birth of the Job Creation Law.

“We discussed the Indonesia-EU CEPA and its relationship with the Job Creation Law.” said Elly during a meeting at the Belgian European Union office, Monday (05/06/2023) local time.

Elly stressed to welcomes trade agreements with anyone, as long as they don’t harm labors.

“There is no problem with Indonesia’s trade agreements with any country, as long as they don’t ignore the ILO core conventions such as freedom, the right to negotiate, freedom from forced labor and tripartite consultation.” She insisted.

Furthermore, Elly thinks that the rights of Indonesian workers are getting worse as a result of the birth of the Job Creation Law. For this reason, he stressed the importance of a strong employment clause to be included in the contents of the Indonesia-EU trade agreement.

Not to forget, Elly expressed her pleasure and gratitude to all parties, especially CNV International, which had helped and provided the opportunity to speak directly with the European Commission and also the European People’s Representative Council.
