ACV-CSCIASIA.ORG, BELGIUM – President of KSBSI, Elly Rosita Silaban said that ITUC affiliates from all European countries yesterday held a demonstration in Brussels on Tuesday 12 December 2023, local time. The General Council (General Council) did not miss out on joining the demonstration before starting their meeting in the afternoon.
“Together Against Austerity” Finance Ministers from all EU countries have met in Brussels, as have Members of the European Parliament. Some of them are pushing for Europe to return to strict austerity rules. This will force the central government to make drastic spending cuts.
Why is this important?
“The European countries’ ITUC-affiliated trade unions encourage that, all need access to quality services, education and a decent safety net to support them in times of need.” said Elly Rosita Silaban in her written statement.
The ongoing negotiations in Brussels could undermine the very things that allow society to thrive. They (Trade Unions) cannot let efforts to return Europe to strict austerity rules succeed.
Working communities need public investment in education, health care, stable wages and a sustainable future. Now, as the continent faces a cost of living crisis driven by high profits, workers should not be the ones paying the price.
The EU’s solidarity-based response to the Covid-19 pandemic shows what is possible. Providing funds to keep people’s jobs and incomes safe is critical.
“They need more of the same, not a return to the failed recipes of the past.” Elly explained.
